Your go-to list for moving into your new home.
Moving into your new home, is exciting.
To help make things easier, we have put together the ultimate guide of things that need to be done leading up to, during, and after you have moved into your new home.
Declutter prior to moving!
Donate, sell or organise a hard rubbish collection prior to moving into your new home is a great idea. This way you will not be packing items that longer suit your lifestyle or match the colour scheme of your new home.
Plan out where your existing furniture is going to go!
Take measurements of the rooms of your new house in advance, so you know where everything is going to fit in. That can make move in day a little less hectic, as some of your bulkier items will already have a place.
Change your addresses!
You will need to go through all your current services and update your details before you move.
If this is the first property you are moving into, you will need to organise all your utilities to be switched on prior to moving in.
Consider updating your:
- Driver’s license address
- Electoral commission
- Banks & credit card companies
- Vehicle and health insurance company
- Your employer
- Health providers such as: dentist, doctor, allied health practitioners
- Online shopping sites you regularly use (eBay, Amazon, PayPal, etc.)
- Loyalty card subscriptions
Research & sign up for necessary services!
If you need to sign up for new services, such as a new phone or internet service provider, these things can often take weeks to get organised. Give yourself enough time, so that you can walk into a home that already has wi-fi and hot running water. Things to consider include:
- Home insurance
- Telephone & internet service provider!
- Gas
- Electricity
- Water
Wyndham City Council online support for new residents:
Wyndham is home to around 290,000 people from a diverse background. Their website has a section dedicated to new residents https://www.wyndham.vic.gov.au/about-council/your-council/new-residents , the page provides info on everything from:
- Knowing your local councillors
- Rate payments
- Organising your home bins
- Hard rubbish collections
- Bin day for your local area

Once you have moved in, it is a good idea to:
Keep a running checklist of things you still need to buy or organise!
No matter how well you plan and organise your move, it is inevitable there will be small bits and pieces that you still need, and you will usually only realise this just at the second that you need it.
Meet your neighbours!
Be sure to take the time to pop round to say a quick hello to the neighbours at some point soon after you move in. It is always helpful to have someone you trust to keep an eye on things when you will be away for longer periods of time.
Join a local community group!
There are many benefits to joining a local community group such as, meeting new people, learning a new skill, or meeting people with similar interests to you. Visit the FAQ or the Neighbourhood Watch pages to find out more about your local area.
Or visit the local neighbourhood community centre to find out what groups regularly meet in your area.
