Westbrook Community Fund is making a difference….

Dec, 2022Meet your Neighbours

AFRICAN-AUSTRALIAN FAMILY AND PARENTING SUPPORT SERVICES

African-Australian Family and Parenting Support Services are using their Westbrook Community Fund to support local youth programs.

This year’s Westbrook Community Fund recently awarded grants totalling $34,500 to 23 happy community and not-for-profit groups from in and around Tarneit and Truganina.

The applicants included Tarneit-based not-for-profit African-Australian Family and Parenting Support Services which plans to put its grant towards several youth engagement activities. We asked Director, Dr Santino Deng about the vital work his organisation does with young African Australians living in the local community.

“Many young African Australians in our community really struggle with making the cultural transition from the country where they were born and trying to fit into a totally new society. We also know that feelings of isolation, boredom and social dislocation significantly increase the risk of young people making bad choices.”

“So, we’re really focused on supporting them through sport, music and other social events, and we’re going to use our grant to hire sports and other community venues where we can bring them together, give them purpose and encourage them to stay active.”

Congratulations to African-Australian Family and Parenting Support Services and all this year’s other successful grant recipients.
